Amaterasu - literal translation - "Great Deity who illuminates the heavens", the Japanese Goddess of the Sun, the central revered Deity (kami) in the Shinto pantheon, the mythical progenitor of the Japanese imperial family! Amaterasu was born from drops of water with which the ancestor god Izanagi washed his left eye during ritual purification after returning from the afterlife - the Land of Yellow Waters.
